FullTilt, PokerStars Go Head-To-Head For World Record
Sunday, July 19 was a big day in the world of online poker: Guinness Book of World Records big! As Full Tilt Poker and Poker Stars, internet poker’s two largest sites, competed for the spot PokerStars currently held in the big book for the largest online poker tournament (by player pool). Poker Stars set current record last year on December 28, and the number to beat was 35,000 players.
At the end of the day, $5.5 million and then some were awarded across the two sites’ 6 cumulative Sunday majors. But the Guinness accolades remained with PokerStas, as FullTilt’s one-shot “Record Breaker” tournament, a $500,000 Guaranteed Tournament with a $5 buy-in taking place in addition to the normal Sunday goings on at Full Tilt, did indeed succeed in beating the old record, but not enough to top PokerStars own efforts happening simultaneously. PokerStars remains the record-holder with 65,000 players entering its $1 buy-in tournament.
155 countries were represented at the tables for PokerStars’ record-shattering tournament, shooting for a rather low top prize of $13,000 (which went to South Carolina’s “004 license”.
As a reminder, every Sunday, Poker Stars holds its Sunday Warm-Up and Sunday Million (both with a $200 + $15 buy-in) and its $500 + $30 Sunday 500.
And every Sunday, Full Tilt Poker holds the $200 + $16 Sunday Mulligan, the $240 + $16 Sunday Brawl, and the $500 + $35 $1.5 Million Sunday Guarantee.
PokerStars also managed to succeed in doling out more prize money that monumental Sunday. with $2.75 million awarded to Full Tilt’s $2.5 million.
