Finland Wins 3 of 4 Nordic Poker Awards At PokerStars EPT Copenhagen Kickoff
It may be 2010 already, but on this past Monday night, February 15, the 2009 Nordic Poker Awards took place, and 2 out of the 4 awards handed out went to the same recipient, none other than Ville Wahlbeck of Finalnd.
Ville won “Best Live Tournament Player” as well as “Best Performance”, no doubt for the 34-year-old’s incredible run last year at the 2009 World Series of Poker, cashing in the top thirteen out of six events he participated in, including making four 2009 WSOP final tables. And they weren’t just in Holdem either, but in Mixed Games, 7 Card Stud, No Limit Deuce to Seven Lowball, Omaha Hi/Lo, H.O.R.S.E., and Razz.
Not only did Finland win 2 awards through Ville that night, but the nation won a third award (again, out of four awarded in total the whole night), thanks to fellow Finn, Patrik Antonius who won “Outstanding Online Player of the Year”, no doubt in part because of his highly publicized rivalry with Tom Dwan and in part because of breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest online poker pot won several times in the same year.
The fourth award of the night went to Swede Kristoffer ‘Sumpas’ Thorsson for “Rookie of the Year” after winning the high-rollers $10,300 event at the PokerStars WCOOP (World Championship of Online Poker), as well as winning the most recent Amsterdam Masters Classic of Poker.
The awards ceremony heralded in the beginning of the PokerStars European Poker Tour Copenhagen Main Event.
