Poker Stars Satellite Winner Wins LAPT Brazil
A player who won his seat in the LAPT Florianopolis event in Brazil through an online poker satellite tournament at Poker Stars has gone on to win the event. Nineteen year-old Matthias Habernig of Kalgenfurt, Austria, who happened to be on vacation traveling South America when he went to Costa do Santinho resort in Florianopolis, Brazil to compete in the event, is the newest Latin American Poker Tour Champion. He’s also R$435,000 (or US $248,004 ) richer.
The following Monday, just a day after winning the LAPT Brazil title, Habernig left South America to return to Austria to begin immediately his nationally mandated public service. Runner-up in the event was Dayan Vardanega from Ponta Grossa and third place went to Miguel Velasco. Habernig was the chip leader at the end of Day 1 of the event, which started out with a field of 364 players, putting him in a fantastic position from the start. Making the Austrian’s LAPT win even more extraordinary was that 16 of the last 20 players remaining were from Brazil or outlying countries, and 5 of the 8 other players at the final table were from Brazil.
Throughout the intense final table, Matthias wore the Poker Stars emblem on his chest, representing for the site landed him that championship seat.
