PokerStars Update: Eastgate Retires, Williams & Selbst Rise
In a recent turn of shocking news, 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event champion and Team Poker Stars poker pro Peter Eastgate has announced that he is retiring form professional poker.
Eastgate’s announcement does not come from any string of bad luck on the felt, because on the contrary, since winning $9 million in the 2008 WSOP, Eastgate has earned a full $1 million more in professional poker (part of which came from a runner-up finish at the 2009 EPT London, an official PokerStars European Poker Tour event).
No, this retirement, says Eastgate was inevitable from the start. All part of his larger plan. The 24-year-old never desired to be a professional poker player, but rather to be financially secure so that he can pursue his true life’s work and passions, wherever they may lie. He admits that he doesn’t yet know where these things lie, but adds that that’s precisely the reason he’s retiring when he is–to find out what those life pursuits are to be.
Meanwhile, recently signed Poker Stars pros David Williams (a former WPT Champion) and Vanessa Selbst (2010 NAPT Mohegan Sun winner, a North American Poker Tour event) have been doing quite well in the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event which is running at this very moment (at the time of this writing). At the start of Day 2, Williams started with $148K and Selbst with $265K
David Williams was runner-up to Greg Raymer in the 2004 World Series of Poker Main Event. Raymer got signed to Team PokerStars, which made the loss doubly painful for Williams who qualified for his seat in that event through a PokerStars online satellite.
