Roland De Wolfe Takes Down World’s Second Triple Crown of Poker

Written by James Washington

With his recent win of the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha High-Low Split event (Event #26) at the 2009 World Series of Poker, Roland De Wolfe of the U.K. cemented his place in poker history as only the second player to win a WSOP braceleted event, and a title in both the World Poker Tour and the European Poker Tour–known collectively as the Triple-Crown of Poker. The two earlier accomplishments that combined to earn Roland his Triple Crown were the 2005 WPT Paris and the 2006 WPT Dublin championships.

Until this most recent win, De Wolfe’s best finish in a World Series of Poker event was third place, which he achieved in a 2006 No Limit Holdem shootout, with 14 lifetime WSOP cashes. Although Roland has played a lot of Pot Limit Omaha, this is only Roland’s third time ever playing in an Omaha High-Low Split tournament, he managed even to beat out the new Mr. Omaha himself, Scott Clements (who took third).

The world’s first person to accomplish this was Gavin Griffin, who completed his Triple Crown on March 31, 2008 with his WPT Borgata win, added to his gold bracelet in the 2004 WSOP $3,000 Pot Limit Omaha event and the 2007 PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final.

Prognosticators are all abuzz about who might be the next to nab themselves a Triple Crown, with some of the biggest names bandied about being: David “Devilfish” Ulliot, Antonio Esfandiari, Barry Greenstein, Daniel Negreanu, and David Benyamine–who each still need an EPT win.
