Phil Ivey’s Breaking WSOP Records Again

A lot of history is being made at the 2009 WSOP, and here is yet one more such historic moment. Phil Ivey has just won his 2nd World Series of Poker bracelet for 2009, an accomplishment matched this year only by one other player, Brock Parker. But that’s not all that makes it so great.

This most recent bracelet, in $2,500 Omaha High-Low/7-Card Stud High-Low (Event #25) is Ivey’s 7th WSOP bracelet of all time, landing him alongside Billy Baxter for 6th place in all-time WSOP bracelets won. Just one more bracelet and he’ll be in 5th place, tied with Erick Seidel.

Making this particular win even more interesting is the fact that while competing in this event, he was also playing another WSOP event at the same time! That was $5,000 PLO High-Low in which he still managed to eke out a 22nd place finish among a field of 198 players. Talk about multi-tasking!

His first 2009 WSOP bracelet was in the No Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball event (Event #28) in which Ivey held the short stack coming into the final table. The last time Ivey won a World Series of Poker bracelet was in 2005, when he became the youngest poker player ever to notch up 5 lifetime WSOP bracelets.

Ivey’s list of WSOP bracelets spans almost the full range of poker styles, with wins in Lowball, SHOE, Pot Limit Omaha, SHOE, 7-Card Stud, and now 7-Card Stud Hi-Low Split. Interestingly enough, Ivey has yet to win a WSOP bracelet in No Limit Holdem, his best finishthere being 5th place.
