Harrah’s has announced their plans to launch an online poker site in the near future.

*Update 2009-12-02* “WSOP Poker” has gone live at poker.wsop.com.  Harrah’s launched WSOP online poker  have the maximum WSOP bonus allowed and an exclusive WSOP bonus code.  On the poker.wsop.com website, they call their bonus a “WSOP Welcome Bonus”.

At this point, Harrah’s will employ a 100% up to $500 first deposit match bonus with their new WSOP poker site. It is still unknown whether there will be a special “WSOP signup bonus” to go along with a unique “WSOP Bonus Code”. WSOP.com is making it very simple to track and earn your poker signup bonus – When you play cash games or tournaments, you earn “Bonus Points” (‘BP’s’).  For every 10 BP’s you accumulate, you earn $1 of your WSOP bonus.

The World Series of Poker site will have a comprehensive poker rewards (VIP) program.  Picture Pokerstars’ VIP program also featuring trips to Harrah’s properties all over the world that you can purchase with WSOP online poker points.

It is unclear exactly how quickly players earn “BP’s” at this point, or how much rake must be generated to earn these Bonus Points.  A “bonus meter” is displayed at the top of your poker table to keep you apprised of how many BP’s you have earned and how many BP’s you need to accumulate to earn the rest of your bonus.  Think of the bonus meter as your petrol gauge, letting you know how mush petrol is in the tank.  Check back here for an exclusive WSOP bonus code as soon as it becomes available.

* UPDATE – 2009-12-02 – The “WSOP Online Poker” website has launched and is available at poker.wsop.com to download and play poker on.  Although it was two weeks after our last update, my information was still pretty accurate.  I have put up this page and had a full WSOP.com poker review up and published before any other poker website online.  That means I’m special…

* UPDATE – 2009-11-16 – WSOP Online Poker is set to launch this week at WSOP.com.  For more detailed information, read our blog post about the news: WSOP Online Poker Site Ready To Launch

The WSOP poker site is operated by Harrah’s and their partner 888.com, who have run one of the biggest and well known online poker brands called Pacific Poker for several years.  The WSOP poker room is being operated on the same software as Pacific Poker is on – the Dragonfish software platform. “Dragonfish” is 888’s business to business division, which is essentially a way for companies to outsource the operation of an online poker room.  This is what Dragonfish will be doing for Harrah’s.  I have learned that Dragonfish is also be handling payment processing, which is good because 888 has always had a good reputation when it comes to poker deposits and withdrawals.

World Series of Poker Games

The World Series of Poker online site offers the standard trinity of poker games: Texas Hold’em, Stud Poker, and Omaha Poker.  WSOP Texas Hold’em is available in Limit, Pot-Limit and No-Limit variations.  WSOP Stud Poker is offered in high and hi-lo variations, while Omaha Poker is available in ‘Omaha High’ and ‘Omaha Hi-Lo’ variations in both Limit and Pot-Limit spreads.

Four types of poker game formats are offered at WSOP.com in the game types mentioned above.  Each of the above games can be played as a cash game (ring game), sit and go tournament, multi-table tournament, and Jackpot tables. The “WSOP Jackpot” tables are progressive jackpot poker tables that pay a minimum of $5.000 when any player is dealt a royal flush. To be eligible for the jackpot, you must bet an additional $0.50 per hand. It’s a really bad deal, and I wouldn’t ever play it if I were you.

WSOP.com Poker Rakeback?

I would be shocked if any WSOP poker site offered rakeback. Rakeback has been a headache for most online poker sites that offer it and Harrah’s will do better offering physical rewards, trips to Harrah’s casinos, and entries to World Series of Poker events all over the world.  WSOP rakeback would not make their shareholders very happy either, I wouldn’t think.

A WSOP.com rakeback equivalent is being offered though.  While playing cash games and real money poker tournaments on WSOP, players earn “WSOP Status Points” which can be redeemed for cash and prizes at the WSOP online

WSOP Status Points

“WSOP Status Points” are accumulated simply by playing online poker for real money, whether it be cash games, sit and go tournaments, or multi-table (MTT) tournaments.  The more Status Points you earn, the more quickly you accumulate “Reward Points”.  Your Reward Points can be redeemed for cash, prizes, or live tournament entries.  Here is a breakdown of how quickly you accumulate WSOP Rewards Points based on how many WSOP Status Points you have earned.

Harrah’s WSOP Online Poker in the US?

Although Harrah’s is a US based brand, they do not offer WSOP online poker in the United States — yet.   There has been speculation among industry insiders for a long time that Harrah’s has been angling to enter the US market the minute that the UIGEA is repealed or new legislation is passed allowing online poker in the United States.  The move to partner with 888.com is seen by some that this outcome is imminent.  I believe that it is only a question of when, not if, Harrah’s WSOP brand enters the US online poker market.  I believe that we could see legal online poker and Harrah’s at the forefront of that market by as early 2010.

With United States lawmakers looking to legalize online poker, they will need a shining beacon of a reputable gambling business to take the lead and make a prominent example that online gambling can be safe and trustworthy.  It looks like Harrah’s “WSOP.com poker” site will be that beacon.

WSOP.com Tournaments

The World Series of Poker brand is known worldwide for their famous poker tournaments, and they are carrying their success at running world class tournaments over to the WSOP online poker room.  The main draw and focus of the WSOP online poker room is definitely their tournaments.  While tournament options are a bit limited at this time, WSOP.com poker is bound to attract a flood of poker tournament players in short order.

WSOP.com is offering the standard mix of multi-table tournaments along with sit n go tournaments.  Many World Series of Poker satellites and super satellites will be run year round in increasing numbers leading up to each year’s World Series of Poker tournaments in Las Vegas and the WSOPE held in London, England.

WSOP.com Multi-Table Tournaments

This is the bread and butter of WSOP Poker Room.  With an increasing number of multi-table poker tournaments held 24 hours a day, WSOP.com is poised to become the premier poker tournament site online.  Play money tournaments, real money tournaments, and satellite tournaments are staples at WSOP.com, with dozens of tournaments being played daily and the number of daily tournaments and the size of the tournament prize pools are increasing rapidly.

WSOP.com Sit and Go Tournaments

The sit and go tournaments offered at WSOP Online Poker are very similar to other online poker sites’ SNG’s.  A “sit and go” at WSOP.com is an impromptu poker tournament that starts when a predetermined number of players enter and pay the registration fee.  WSOP sit and go tournaments are mostly one table tournaments (9 players), but SNG’s with more than one table are offered as well.  The largest sit and go tournament offered at WSOP Online is 50 players maximum.

As soon as 50 players enter the tournament queue, players are seated and the tournament starts.  For one table tournaments, two table tournaments, and three table tournaments, the top three places are paid with 50% of the total prize pool going to first place, 30% to send, and 20% going to the third place finisher.  For 31 to 50 player tournaments, five players are paid prize money according to the chart above this section.
